Ankle and Kneeling Modified
In a Montana class the summer of 2012, a BFL Teacher in Training was attending Segment II and III to gather some momentum towards his mentoring and practice teaching requirements. He had had a very serious ankle injury about 3 years earlier in which he fractured both his fibula and tibia several inches above the ankle joint. He has quite a bit of hardware with plates and screws present and continues to have restrictions at his ankle joint inhibiting his ability to carry out some processes, especially Ankle in Kneeling.
This ankle injury has impacted his movement capacity and in a generalized way has caused his joints to stiffen throughout his spine and elsewhere distant to the injury. He is also aware of a traumatic component, as he was actually in the emergency room for four days after the injury, before the hospital was able to get him to surgery for the fracture.
What is of most interest is that the modifications we came up with for his ankle problem did not directly address or change anything at the ankle itself. It changed the challenge on his system as a whole by lessening the demand required from his spinal component. This in turn allowed him the gift of incremental learning and with the optimal position and support he was able to make changes that were more global in nature. At the end of the process, he not only noticed increased Range of Motion in his ankle, but he also had more ease and fluidity when going from the floor to standing, increased arm swing, and other indications of improvement during gait.
I was able to record Rod White doing these modifications, while I am talking him through the process. Please watch the brief video above of Rod’s movement explorations. It is fun to watch him going through such a rich learning experience and to hear his report of the changes in his own words. I think that Ruthy’s reference of creating “Greenhouse Conditions for Learning” come to mind while watching this short video.

“The more your posture improves the stronger your bones become. When your movement is coordinated as nature meant, the very weight of your body itself spontaneously works to strengthen bone in the activities of daily life.
